This segment of the popular tabloid television program focused on the unsolved "Zodiac" murders. Retired police officer Harvery Hines became convinced that the had identified the notorious killer as "Larry Kane." Hines' suspect was identified by possible Zodiac victim Kathleen Johns. In 1970, Johns claimed that she had escaped from the killer during a failed abduction attempt yet many investigators and researchers question whether she had, in fact, encountered the Zodiac, and some even suggested that she had invented the story. [Johns tale was featured in the 2007 film ZODIAC.] Police briefly investigated and cleared Larry Kane as a suspect, but Hines remained convinced "with every fiber" of his being that his suspect was the Zodiac.

"Why? Why don't you idiots ever learn? Don't you know people like me exist?" asks The Zodiac Killer in voice-over as he calmly walks down a suburban street in broad daylight wearing a bad wig and one of those silly novelty glasses with the big rubber nose, jumps on a passing teenage girl, stabs her to death, then calmly walks away as if nothing happened. Unfortunately, "The Zodiac" existed alright, but the identity of the madman that murdered at least five people in California between 1966 and 1969 — then taunted the police with a series of letters and confessions sent to various newspapers — remains as much of a mystery today as it did in 1970 when The Zodiac Killer was made. But that doesn't stop this twisted little tabloid horror film from creating its own profile of who the psycho is. In fact, it gives us two potential Zodiacs. One is Graver (BOB JONES), a bald truck driver by day, and a wig-wearing woman chaser by night. He also hates his ex-wife and, apparently, women in general. The other is Jerry (HAL REED), a shy, affable mailman who doesn't feel comfortable around people and keeps bunny rabbits as friends. Both have respectable jobs, live in cozy neighborhoods, and easily blend into (a bubblingly corrupt) society despite a general loathing of humanity. And both could easily be the guy who walks up to a police car and shoots the cop behind the wheel, kills a couple making out in a VW van, and blows away the waitress and cook of a local diner as they sit chatting <b>...</b>

The FBI confirmed to CBS13 on Thursday that they are now running laboratory tests on some items that may link a suspect to the killer. The evidence was given to the FBI by a Pollock Pines man who also claims he recently found the disguise worn by the Zodiac Killer during one of his attacks. "The identity of the Zodiac Killer is Jack Tarrance. He's my stepfather," said Dennis Kaufman. Eight years of Dennis Kaufman's life has been consumed with attempting to prove the only father he's known since he was five-years-old is none other than the Zodiac Killer. "This is a handwriting comparison I did," Kaufman said, showing handwriting samples of what he claims to be his stepfather's and the Zodiac Killer's. He claims the samples are too similar to be coincidence. "The composite is a dead ringer," Kaufman said, showing composite sketch of the killer next to his stepfather's -- a resemblance that is undeniable between pictures of Jack Tarrance and descriptions of the zodiac. Kaufman also claims his stepfather, in a taped phone conversation, indirectly admitted being the zodiac killer. Jack Tarrance died in 2006. The Zodiac Killer is one of the great unsolved serial killer mysteries of all time, taking only second place to Jack the Ripper. Even though police investigated over 2500 potential suspects, the case was never officially solved. There were a few suspects that stood out, but the forensic technology of the times was not advanced enough to nail any one of them conclusively. This October, 1966 killing began a ghoulish series of murders that panicked the people of the San Francisco area. For years the Zodiac taunted the police with weird ciphers, phone calls, insulting and cryptic messages.
